Google Accounts

Both classes can now access their google accounts and should be able to share work they do on google docs and google slides with Mrs Charlesworth and Miss Mullett!

To do this, they need to use their INSPIRE MINDSET username followed by @sat.education and then their inspire mindset password.

If they do any home learning on the computer, this would be a brilliant way to share it with us. We have discussed this being used for learning and school related tasks as well as how to make sure we're staying safe online - we only share things with people we know. We really should only need to share any docs or slides with our teachers unless told otherwise in class time.

We can't wait to see all of the wonderful learning that happens outside the classroom!

Rounding Numbers (and rapping!)

This week in year 5 we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000! Both classes have learnt the 'rounding rap':

This rap helps us to remember what we have to do to round numbers. Have a go at some at home - make some 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 digit numbers and round them to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000. Inspire points will be available for anybody doing impressive work at home!

Eggy Science in 5 Poplar!

Egg Throwing Challenge

This afternoon in 5 Poplar we were given the challenge of keeping an egg safe when throwing it at least 3m across the classroom! We worked in teams with a limited selection of resources to try to help our eggs to a safe landing.

 We launched our eggs from a line at one end of the classroom. They had to go over the top of a ruler across two chairs and travel at least 3m to the second line on the carpet.



We can't wait to have another go next week and improve our designs. We're also going to share what we have learnt from our first attempts today with 5 Rowan to see which class can keep the most eggs safe!

Today, some of them were a bit scrambled by the end of the lesson...

Odd One Out

Odd One Out


In year 5 on Wednesday we were given a list of 3 items and asked to choose the odd one out. We had to be able to explain our reasons why. We all found this really inspiring and in our ICT lesson we used skills to search accurately online using appropriate search terms (and think about the reliability of the sources we were finding) to learn more about the properties of the items we were comparing.

5 Poplar were asked to explain which was the odd one out between wood, paper and stone.

5 Rowan were asked to explain which was the odd one out between paper, water and chocolate.

Both classes came up with some brilliant answers and it really got us all thinking. We would all be very interested to hear of any other ideas you come up with at home - perhaps you could do more research? Remember that you need to stay safe online and always show an adult if you are not sure about something on the internet.

Knock, knock, Neighbour...

Today year 5 have been exploring column subtraction. We were looking at 'borrowing' and knocking on our neighbours if we didn't have enough to do our subtraction in the column we were looking at.


Try some of these at home to practise:

6,709 - 4,478 =

23,072 - 12,850 =

63,8006 - 41,653 = 

367.09 - 125.85 =

Remember to use your place value knowledge and don't forget we're doing a SUBTRACTION sum.

What is the value of your name?

Following on from our morning challenge...

Write a sentence or a group of words. 

Using the chart, work out the value of your words. 

What is the highest value sentence you can create? Can you beat the total we had in class today? It was over 1000! INSPIRE points available to those who bring in any work showing they've had a go at the challenge! Good luck! 

If you can't remember how it works check this example out:

1) Write a word - INSPIRE 

2) Write the value of each letter using the chart

I=9 N= 14 S= 19 P= 16 I= 9 R= 18 E=5

3) Add all the values together carefully

9+14+19+16+9+18+5 = 90

4) Choose a new word and repeat. 

5) Add the total values up for each word you've tried to get a grand total.
